Apparently, all manner of ailments could be cured through the replacement of the electricity that had supposedly been “drained from the system”. Later, in the early 20th century, the fad was for radiation, which was also widely believed to have curative powers. A friend of mine who grew up in Shanghai during the 1930s said he remembered those days. |
